There are many ways to clean bones. Selecting which method is personal choice and reflects the needs of the preparator and client. Each method has advantages and disadvantages. The causes of these disadvantages can be looked at critically to give us better, higher quality bone. Not all bone is grown equally, however, and discussing the differences between the bones also informs individuals how to handle these situations.

Bare Bones Solutions President and Head of Research, Steve Kary discusses bone prep, chemistry, pitfalls, shortcuts and shares experience from his time developing bone prep chemicals.

Bring a guest and encourage them to become a CFGA member so they can enjoy all the perks and benefits that come with the membership!

In this workshop you will have the opportunity to learn about the basics of blacksmithing. We will cover anvil terms and usage, hammer selection, desired stance and shop safety. The main focus of the day is building a large outdoor fire poker where the blacksmith techniques of tapering, scrolling, bending, elongating, twisting and folding will all be taught.

Each fire poker will be as individual as you are with a variety of designs to choose from for a truly one of a kind product as well as experience.

Here is what to can look forward to:

After an introduction and safety talk, we will start with a practice project to learn the fundamental skills of tapering and scrolling, and then move to the main project, an outdoor fire poker. It will teach a variety of basic blacksmithing skills such as how to taper, scroll, twist, bend and elongate. Each participant will have a variety of design choices to choose from to make their item unique to them. We provide all the materials and tools for the project and it is yours to take home at the end of the day. Must be 14+ for this workshop.

        Please bring:

        • A water bottle - you will want to re-hydrate.
        • Expect the shop to get very warm so dress in layers you can remove to remain more comfortable. We also recommend long sleeved cotton shirts vs nylon shirts and jeans vs nylon or sweat pants.

There will be coffee and snacks provided for you in the shop and access to a porta-potty.

We will take a lunch break from approximately 12:00-1:00 pm. Bring your bag lunch to eat inside the house with us (microwave available) or drive to town to purchase something. Depending upon individual skills and design choices, you will be finished your project sometime between 3:30-5:00 pm.
